Bone and joint infections has varied presentation in form of septic arthritis, prosthetic joint infections, osteomyelitis, spinal infections (infection of disc, vertebra or epidural space) and diabetic foot osteomyelitis.

High index suspicion of alternative diagnosis, appropriate imaging techniques, high-quality microbiological sampling followed by advanced microbiological testing is important to allow appropriate and targeted antimicrobial therapy. Also there is high incidence of drug resistance bugs commonly encountered in prosthetic joint surgeries or transplant, often requiring meticulous evaluation followed by appropriate therapy with or without retaining of the implant device.

Most of the bone and joint infections are chronic in nature requiring long duration of antimicrobial therapy taking appropriate consideration of the antibiogram or antimicrobial susceptibility pattern.
