The liver is an organ mainly deals with detoxifying various metabolites, synthesizes of proteins and produces chemical necessary for digestion and growth in humans.
Liver also plays an important role in host defence against invasive microorganisms. The impact of infections in the liver can vary greatly, presenting with a wide variety of manifestations from asymptomatic elevations in liver enzymes, acute liver failure, hepatic fibrosis, and cirrhosis. Various viral infections commonly associated with liver involvement are Hepatitis group (A, B, C and E), CMV and EBV. Other causes of liver infections are parasitic (mainly Plasmodium), bacterial (Leptospira, Salmonella) and fungal (Candida).
